Fill the Fridge July: Small Acts, Collective Impact

July is a time of sunshine, family gatherings, and summer traditions. Yet for many of our neighbors, it is also one of the most challenging times of the year.

At The Red Shoes, we are proud to launch our third annual Fill the Fridge July, a month-long community initiative dedicated to keeping our Community Fridge stocked and accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for anyone in need.

The reality is that food insecurity continues to affect thousands of families across Louisiana. During the summer months, many children lose access to school meal programs, household expenses often increase, and food assistance resources can become stretched thin.

What began as a simple act of care has grown into a powerful community effort. Every day throughout July, individuals, families, businesses, faith communities, and organizations pledge a day to help fill the fridge with fresh food, beverages, pantry staples, prepared meals, and hygiene items. Together, these small acts create a steady source of nourishment and dignity for our neighbors.

Our Community Fridge operates on a simple principle of mutual aid: Take what you need. Leave what you can. There are no applications, no income requirements, and no barriers to access. Anyone can stop by at any time to donate or receive food.

Over the years, we have witnessed firsthand how meaningful this resource can be. A stocked fridge can provide relief to a family facing a difficult month, nourishment to someone working multiple jobs, or a helping hand to a neighbor navigating an unexpected challenge. Hunger does not discriminate, and neither does compassion.

There are many ways to participate in Fill the Fridge July:

  • Pledge a day (or several days) to stock the fridge

  • Donate fresh produce, prepared meals, beverages, or pantry items

  • Contribute hygiene products and household essentials

  • Organize a group donation with coworkers, friends, or community organizations

  • Help spread the word through your personal and professional networks

Every donation matters. Whether you contribute a bag of groceries, prepare a few sandwiches, or rally a group to fill the fridge together, you become part of a collective effort to care for our community.

At The Red Shoes, we believe that well-being begins with meeting basic needs. Through programs that nurture personal and spiritual growth and through practical initiatives like the Community Fridge, we are committed to creating a more connected, compassionate Baton Rouge.

This July, we invite you to join us. Together, we can transform small acts of generosity into meaningful community impact.
