About the event

Join us for a special screening of From Ring Shout to Easter Rock (2025), a 22-minute documentary exploring Georgia's Gullah Geechee Ring Shout and Louisiana's Easter Rock - two African American spiritual traditions rooted in the experiences of enslaved Africans and sustained across generations.

The film documents the historic gathering of the Gullah Geechee Ring Shouters and the Winnsboro Easter Rock Ensemble, bringing together communities whose traditions have endured for more than a century. Through song, movement, memory, and fellowship, the film explores the living connections between past and present.

Following the screening, we will be joined via Zoom by Mr. Griffin Lotson of the Gullah Geechee Ring Shouters and Ted Johnson, producer of the film. The discussion will be facilitated by Dr. Joyce Marie Jackson, folklorist, cultural anthropologist, and recipient of the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities Lifetime Contributions to the Humanities Award.
