Book Study: Why Good People Do Bad Things; Understanding Our Darker side

This book study will continue until the group feels the material is fully covered.

In this exploration of the Shadow, James Hollis helps us understand the discrepancy between what we say to be our value and the actions we frequently take that are destructive. His aim is to help us become aware of what in us drives our daily choices and actions. Not only does Hollis help us become aware of the inner forces working against us but also of the Shadow working in our culture, our religion and our organizations and throughout history.

Serving others heals us. Through our service we will discover our own wholeness—and the way to restore hidden wholeness in the world.

In My Grandfather's Blessings, Rachel Naomi Remen, a cancer physician and master storyteller, uses her luminous stories to remind us of the power of our kindness and the joy of being alive.

Nature Connection
May 8
10 - 11:45 am
Iris Pavilion located behind the Main Library off Independence Blvd.

Re-connecting with the natural world enables us to find the way back to our true inner nature, and also to connect more deeply with each other. Nature offers us the path to health, peace and well-being of mind and body. It also teaches us to respect our human and more-than-human community.

  • Engage with nature for relaxation, growth, healing and re-connection, through various exercises designed to quiet the mind, heighten sensory awareness and tap into the wisdom of nature.
  • In a tranquil setting, we will enjoy meditation, mindful walking and journaling. With gentle guidance, most of the session will take place in silence.
  • Experience an individual practice, enhanced by sharing space and intention with others. There will be the chance to share experiences and discuss after each exercise.

Bring pen and paper for journaling, water and anything else you need to keep comfortable outdoors (comfortable clothes & shoes, a snack).

We will follow current Louisiana Department of Health guidelines around Covid 19, and observe 6 feet physical distancing throughout the session.

Facilitated by Lilia Kapsali, an Outdoor Environmental & Sustainability Educator and recent transplant to the US. She has worked in nature conservation and education in the Republic of Cyprus, Indonesian Borneo and the United Kingdom. She would like to contribute to and support the well-being of Baton Rougeans by utilizing public parks and green spaces around the city. She believes that together we can learn and grow.

We will meet at the Iris Pavilion located behind the Main Library on the Independence Boulevard side by the botanical gardens.
