  The Red Shoes

The Red Shoes, located at 2303 Government Street, is a nonprofit center offering opportunities for spiritual enrichment and personal growth through group book studies, weekend retreats, and workshops.  We offer creative development through the art forms of collage, drawing, painting, writing, drumming circles, and music workshops. We also offer movement classes including yoga and various dance disciplines.  Classes are designed to broaden one’s understanding and develop one’s listening skills within a supportive community.

The Red Shoes derives its name from the ancient fairy story of the same name, specifically as interpreted by Jungian analyst Clarissa Pinkola Estes. She speaks of the importance for each woman to find the shoes that uniquely fit her feet, rather than wearing ill-fitting shoes in an effort to please someone else. We believe that the hand-made life is the life well lived. The red shoes are a symbol of the journey one takes toward becoming one’s true authentic self. Also, like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, who also wore red shoes, seekers discover that all along within themselves they have had that which will take them home.
