If you have attended any class or program at The Red Shoes and want to spend more time with our community of seekers, join us for an intimate Tuesday afternoon chat. Share your thoughts, your successes and your challenges with an interested, caring and supportive circle that encourages personal and spiritual growth. Tuesday may become your favorite day of the week!

Knitting Circle
Tuesdays     7-8pm
Join our new knitting circle and combine craft with contemplation to awaken the creativity within.  New knitters will learn the basics and experienced knitters may bring works in progress and brush up on existing skills.  All needle crafts are welcome.

The 11th Hour - Film Study  Going Green    

Wednesday     August 5     6:30-8pm

Narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, this captivating documentary explores the perilous state of our planet and the means by which we can change our course.  Contributing to this film are noted politicians, scientists and ambassadors for the importance of a universal ecological consciousness. “Our problems began ….. when we started mistakenly looking on nature as external to us and endlessly exploitable.”

 

Facilitated by Dorothy Prowell, an entomology professor at LSU with a research background in conservation biology.

Collage: Find Your Hidden Artist 

Fridays                  August 7,14,21,28              10am-12noon

Express yourself artistically even if you can not draw or paint.  Collage is the perfect art form for people who can not draw and believe they can not be artists.  Using simple techniques, with paper, scissors and glue, you can create unique and beautiful works of art. In this beginner class, we will learn basic techniques and principles of collage.  Each week we will create a different themed project.

 

Facilitated by Pam Arnold, who has found her inner artist and loves helping others discover their talents.

Effective and Practical Time Management Strategies 

Thursday               August 13             7-8:30pm

Wondering how you can accomplish everything on your list and still have time to relax and enjoy life?  Are the things on your Monday list still not done by Friday?Time management is the key to success. Learn how to balance work, family and leisure by learning to use your time more effectively. 

 

Facilitated by Maurice Velasquez, a professional life coach who helps individuals organize their time and reach their goals.

Eating for Health III: Hypertension 

Saturday                August 15             12-3pm

Are you being treated for hypertension? Dr. Francine Morrison teaches how to cook and what to eat to control hypertension.  Chef Celeste will cook a meal that contains some of the herbs, food and spices that will be discussed.  Are you looking for a way to improve your health without taking more medication?  Cooking with the correct herbs and spices can actually help your body work more efficiently and reduce certain health problems. Join us for our series, Eating for Health and learn how to season your way to better health. Experts on herbs, spices and nutrition and an award winning chef will offer insights and instruction. Each session will feature Chef Celeste’s cooking demonstration in our own Red Shoes Kitchen creating a meal that contains ingredients that offer particular healing properties. Receive medically grounded information, suggestions for what to add to your pantry, recipes and a delicious lunch.  

Facilitated by Dr. Francine Morrison, a psychiatrist with Capital Area Human Services, an herbal simplest, who is pursuing a degree in Natural Health and Chef Celeste Gill, winner of the first Baton Rouge Iron Chef contest.

Book Swap  Going Green

Wednesday           August 19             7-8:30pm   

You need books you don't have!  You have books you don't need. Join us for a Book Swap!  Clear your bookshelves to make room for new favorites. Participants bring good, gently used books and swap them for other books. Take a step towards sustainable living by reusing books that might otherwise end up in a land fill or incinerator. It’s good for you and it’s good for the environment!  Please: no periodicals, encyclopedias, or technical/ legal manuals. Accepting books and pre-shop 7-7:30pm.  (Limit 10 books)

Disability or Difference

Tuesday                 August 25             7-8pm

Nurture your empathetic spirit at a learning disabilities simulation.  This powerful, interactive experience is designed to help participants understand the special gifts and challenges encountered by people with learning disabilities in their everyday lives.  The presentation will focus on the impact of Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and ADHD.
 
Facilitated by Georgann Mire who is an education consultant and tutor at Mire Consulting, LLC and works in the Office of Disability Services at BRCC.

Reiki Class—Level 1 

Saturday                August 29             10am-3pm

Reiki is a Japanese word meaning spiritually guided life energy, an energy which is everywhere and animates us all. Reiki is a form of spiritual healing that channels energy through the hands of the practitioner, helping to harmonize body, mind and spirit.  In this training, learn the history of Reiki, the hand positions used in healing and receive your "attunement," the act of "matching vibration" with a specific spiritual energy. Reiki is a natural healing system that relieves pain and eases acute problems. 

Facilitated by Robin Leake, a certified Reiki Master in Usui, Karuna and Japanese Reiki.
